Tokyo faced a $9 billion loss hosting the 2020 Olympics during the pandemic, with no spectators and a significant market downturn in the city. But what if Tokyo gets another opportunity to host the Olympics in 2036—this time repurposing existing venues to create the "perfect Olympics" for both the nation and the city?

Logo & Custom Typeface

The Tokyo 2036 logo reimagines Japanese calligraphy in a stamp-like form, celebrating Japan's cultural legacy while inspiring its present and future.

The custom typeface for Tokyo 2036 includes variations of the letterform “T” that reflect Japan's cultural assets, expressing the nation's dynamic cultural abundance. The typeface is designed with the concept of connections that link the past and present of Japan.

Poster Series

The posters consists of two series: an Olympics poster series highlighting Olympic athletes, and a Culture seriesfeaturing Tokyo-based artists, architects, and illustrators. The two series reflect the spirit of Tokyo as both a cultural metropolis and a host city of the Olympic Games.

Website & Social

The website and social media serve as a platform not only to capture the moments of the Olympics, but also to function as an archive that promotes Japan’s rich culture—art, fashion, anime, food, and more.

Merch & Spatial

The merchandise and spatial applications of the identity are rooted in the custom typeface. Using both minimal color red—and a broader color palette, the system emphasizes visual rhythm and the spirit of the identity.
